1. Shun Jie Fried Rice Cake 顺姐炸年糕

Nian gao 年糕 (Rice Cake) sometimes translated as year cake or Chinese New Year’s cake, is a food prepared from glutinous rice flour. It is a must have during Chinese New Year as it symbolizes prosperity and good luck.

Lucky for us in Ipoh, we don’t need to wait till Chinese New Year to enjoy this delicious delight. There is one famous Fried Nian Gao (Fried Rice Cake) at Pasir Pinji.

Nian Gao, is sandwiched between slices of taro and sweet potato, clamped firmly together before dip in a batter, and then into hot oil and deep fry till golden brown perfection.

The fried Nian Gao is crispy on the outside, and soft in the inside that it melts like a caramel lava. The taste is mind-blowing that one serving is not enough.

2. Woong Kee Bean Curd 旺記祖傳豆花

Woong Kee Bean Curd 旺記祖傳豆花 first started the business on a trishaw in Bercham, with kindergarden like tables and chairs set up along the corridor outside of 7-eleven.

It quickly gained its fame for its silky and smooth texture Tau Fu Fah over the years. If you ask any local, this is the best around the area.

Woong Kee also has a ‘drive thru’ concept. Stop by the storefront and a staff will attend to you. Order and eat in your car.

Recommended to order: Black Soya Bean 黑豆精, Gula Melaka Tau Fu Fah 椰糖豆腐花, Ginger

Now, it has branched out to several locations in Malaysia. The menu now has more variants such as with ginkgo, big red bean, grass jelly, lotus seed, rice ball 湯圓, nuts and sesame, etc.
